Carpet
Open riser stairs in carpet
Open riser basement stairs carpeted, with every tread wrapped around the front and the underside so there is no raw edge anywhere.

What we did
Open risers have no back to them, so the carpet cannot simply be tucked in behind each step the way it is on a closed staircase. Every tread is wrapped: over the nose, under the front edge and back along the underside, which is the part people see from below on a basement flight. The stairs were stripped back to bare treads and new gripper was fitted along the back of each step before anything was laid, so the carpet sits tight and the wrapped edges stay put.

Curved staircase in carpet
A curved staircase stripped back to bare treads and recarpeted around its full sweep, cut tight to the oak stringer on every winder.
Carpet inset into a curved staircase
Carpet set into the top of each tread on a curved flight, wrapped around the rounded starting step, with the dark stained risers left bare.
